When the wind broke a tree limb off in my yard, the leaves were green and the branch looked alive for some time. But when I looked at it lying there, I knew it was dead. It’s why God warned Adam and Eve not to take of the forbidden fruit in the garden. Don’t eat of the tree or you will die, God said. Though Satan told them they wouldn’t die, when they sinned and broke away from their life-giving source—God—though they still looked alive, they were already dead. John 15:4.
