Fasting was one of my least favorite spiritual disciplines. Fasting has caused me to have horrible migraines and be so sick I couldn’t eat for hours afterward. I couldn’t see how violent sickness drew me closer to God. Now that I’m older and wiser, I realize God didn’t expect that of me. Yes, I still fast, but to prevent sickness I don’t fast without liquids now. And, it doesn’t have to be for 24 hours either. Fasting for me is just hanging out with God. It’s also a fast from the news and from social media, giving me time to listen for his voice without distractions.
